“Promenades: En chemin de fer,” the eighth piece in Poulenc’s collection Promenades, is a piano miniature marked by forward momentum suggesting the motion of a train and by witty musical gestures. Within its compact span, repeated rhythms and accents propel the music forward and create changes of expression. The tempo should remain steady without becoming mechanically rigid; clear contrasts in dynamics and articulation bring out its lightness and humor. In faster passages, evenness of touch is important, while the direction of the melody should remain perceptible amid the finer movements.
