Overview

Ernst von Dohnányi (1877–1960) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, conductor, and teacher. Active during the transition from the late Romantic era to modern music, he combined Brahmsian structural discipline with lyrical richness, refined harmony, and brilliant piano writing. Alongside Bartók and Kodály, he helped shape Hungarian musical life, yet his own style developed primarily from the German-Austrian tradition rather than through direct use of folk music. He enjoyed an international career as a virtuoso pianist and made an important contribution to music education and performance in Hungary. Among his best-known works are the Variations on a Nursery Song and the Six Concert Etudes. His piano music, including the Three Pieces, Op. 23, and the Three Singular Pieces, Op. 44, reveals a distinctive balance of poetic expression, wit, and technical sophistication.
