The first of Dohnányi’s works, this is a poised and graceful dance piece. The clear meter and balanced phrases characteristic of a gavotte are joined by contrasting passages suggestive of a musette, creating a concise yet expressive range of moods. Listening for the exchange between melody and accompaniment, as well as the subtle differences in repeated sections, is one of its pleasures. In performance, crisp articulation should be maintained without making the sound too hard, allowing the natural flow of the dance to emerge.
