The second piece of Sarcasms, “Allegro rubato,” is a piano miniature in which biting dissonances, unexpected accents, and dry humor intersect. Its quick-moving character also allows the pulse to bend flexibly, bringing out the music’s ironic gestures. Short motives and contrasting sonorities appear in succession, building tension before the piece closes with striking suddenness. In performance, the music should not rely on forceful playing alone: clearly shape the placement of accents and the spaces created by rests, while balancing a hard-edged tone with a sense of lightness.
