Overview

Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) was a leading figure in Italian modern music. After studying in Bologna, he worked mainly in Rome and gained international recognition for orchestral music rich in color and atmosphere. His best-known works include the “Roman Trilogy”—Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome, and Roman Festivals—which evokes the landscapes, history, and public life of the city through vivid orchestral sound. Respighi also had a deep interest in Renaissance and Baroque music; in works such as Ancient Airs and Dances, he combined older melodies and styles with a modern musical language. His piano music includes the Six Pieces and the Six Pieces for Children. These works feature lyrical melodies, dance-like rhythms, and approachable character, while also revealing his refined sense of color and expressive warmth.
