This work consists of 10 short pieces based on a theme by Clara Wieck. While preserving the outline of the theme, each piece varies in its sense of meter, figuration, harmonic movement, and texture, alternating singing melodies with a more urgent forward drive. An important point of interest lies not only in differentiating the character of each piece, but also in creating a sense of structure that allows the set to unfold as a unified whole. In performance, the melody should be brought clearly to the foreground above inner voices and accompaniment, with careful attention to the breathing of each phrase. Pedaling should be changed in accordance with the harmony to avoid clouding the sound; contrasting dynamics and flexible tempos can then connect intimacy with dramatic intensification, making the transformation of the theme easier to perceive.
