Georg Friedrich Händel ： Suite HWV 441

This suite from Handel’s second collection of harpsichord suites is distinguished by rhythms suggestive of Baroque dance and a clear texture in which the voices pass ideas from one to another. Its several movements each present a different character, inviting listeners to appreciate the contrast between flowing motion and more tranquil, songful passages. A particular point of interest is the momentum created not only by the principal melody but also by the movement of the inner and bass voices. In performance, ornaments should be naturally connected to the flow of the beat, while the notes retain their full values and remain crisp and clearly articulated. Using pedal sparingly and differentiating the voices, then shaping the tempo and expression of each movement with care, brings out the transparent quality of this keyboard work.
