Georg Friedrich Händel

Georg Friedrich Händel (1685–1759) was a leading composer of the Baroque era. Born in Halle, Germany, he pursued further musical training in Italy before establishing his career primarily in England, where he became a major figure in London’s musical life. He wrote prolifically in many genres, including opera, oratorio, orchestral music, chamber music, and keyboard works. His style is marked by clear, powerful melodies, vivid harmony, a strong sense of structure, and a distinctive combination of dramatic energy and ceremonial grandeur. Among his best-known works are the oratorios Messiah and Judas Maccabaeus, as well as the orchestral suites Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. His keyboard music likewise reflects his gift for dance rhythms, contrapuntal writing, and brilliant, improvisatory gestures. In piano repertoire, the Two Chaconnes and the Six Fugues, HWV 605–610, offer an opportunity to experience the rhythmic vitality, contrapuntal craftsmanship, and richness of sound characteristic of Händel’s music.
