“Un reflet dans le vent” is the eighth and final piece in Messiaen’s Preludes. As if reflecting forms swaying in the wind, it unfolds through continuous shifts in delicate movement and resonance, with stillness and fluctuation, tension and release, continually intersecting. Rather than placing a clearly defined melody in the foreground, the piece makes an impression through its changing registers and colors. In performance, it is important to keep the overlapping voices clear while carefully shaping the sense of direction and breathing within the motion. Instead of relying only on sudden changes in dynamics, listen closely to the resonance sustained by the pedal and bring out the subtle changes of color.
