Joseph Maurice Ravel ： Nocturnes Sirenes

This work presents “Sirènes,” the final movement of Ravel’s Nocturnes, in a version for 2 pianos. Within a sound world not bound by a clearly defined tonality, delicate movements continually shimmer, while overlapping layers of sound create a dreamlike space. Rather than bringing a melody to the foreground, performers should focus on changes in tone color and resonance. Where the two pianos interact, it is important to judge their respective roles and dynamics carefully, maintaining transparency without interrupting the flow. The pedal should preserve the resonance while avoiding muddiness, and the gradual movement from quiet tension to a rich climax should be shaped with care to bring out the work’s appeal.
