Beginning with the repetition of a single note, this piece creates tension through a severely restricted selection of pitches. In the opening “Sostenuto,” repetitions in the low register are struck with weight and restraint, while the “Misurato” section gradually transforms the motion. In the final “Prestissimo,” the tempo and sense of urgency rise sharply, leaving a powerful afterimage in the final note. The repetitions should not sound merely mechanical: it is important to project the weight of each note, the space between rests, and the gradual acceleration clearly. Use the pedal carefully to avoid blurring the sound, while maintaining evenness in the fingertips through the extreme changes of speed.
