The first piece in the Catalogue of Birds, “The Alpine Chough,” is a miniature marked by sharp musical gestures that capture the bird’s calls and sonorities spreading across a wide register. Short motifs change shape through different rhythms and registers, while quiet spaces alternate with lively movement to carry the music forward. The small-scale figures should be played with clear, even articulation, yet with enough flexibility to preserve a sense of breath rather than sounding mechanical. The pedal should support the colors without clouding the resonance; in sudden dynamic changes, attention to tone color as well as volume can make the bird’s presence and the breadth of the surrounding space especially vivid.
