“Cordes à vide” is an étude built on limited pitch relationships, combining recurring figures in different layers. While its short sequences move forward without interruption, changes in accent, register, and density create a shifting aural impression. One of its particular attractions lies in the complex momentum that emerges as the positions of the beats and the movements of the hands subtly diverge, despite the apparently simple repetition. In performance, it is important to preserve the contours of each figure, maintain an even touch without becoming mechanically hard, and clearly project the shifting accents and overlapping resonance. Rather than pursuing speed alone, keeping the hands independent and the rhythm precise brings out its transparent sense of motion.
