The second of Scriabin’s 2 Impromptus condenses lyrical melody and shifting emotion into a brief work. A songful theme alternates with tension arising from changing harmonies, while the expression grows more intense toward the close. The melody should be allowed to resonate fully without making the inner voices or accompanying figures too heavy. Rather than fixing the tempo rigidly, natural rubato shaped by the breathing of each phrase brings out the freedom characteristic of an impromptu.
