Overview

Erik Satie (1866–1925) was a French composer and pianist who occupied a distinctive position during the transition from Romanticism to twentieth-century music. Active mainly in Paris, he developed an alternative to the weightier expressiveness of late Romanticism, favoring concise, transparent textures, modal melodies, and quiet music shaped by repetition. His works also feature unusual titles and a characteristic sense of humor. Satie influenced later French music and neoclassicism, and his spare musical language is often discussed in connection with the development of minimalist approaches. Among his piano works, the 3 Gymnopédies and 3 Gnossiennes are especially well known for their delicate writing and use of musical space. The 3 Sarabandes and 12 Petits Chorals likewise reveal his economy of expression and distinctive harmonic sensibility.
