This set of variations preserves the outline of its theme while introducing changes in ornamentation, rhythm, register, and the movement of the accompaniment. The contrast between the right hand’s delicate motion and the left hand’s support, as well as between singing melodies and lively passagework, provides much of its appeal. Rather than presenting the variations as isolated fragments, performers should shape a continuous flow by remaining aware of their connection to the theme. In performance, it is important to keep a clear sense of meter and articulate each figure without allowing the contrasts to interrupt the musical line. Ornamentation should not sound mechanical; when shaped according to the direction and breathing of the melody, it brings out the music’s transparency and vitality. Use the pedal sparingly enough to avoid blurring the sound, while keeping the overlapping voices clear.
