An arrangement for piano by Toru Takemitsu, based on “The Internationale” by P. Dogeteur. Rather than projecting the familiar melody with sheer force, Takemitsu brings out its contour and the colors behind it through the placement of registers and sonorities, as well as the use of space. Listen closely to the contrast between the melody’s clarity and passages in which the sonorities seem to shift and fade. Instead of making a firm claim about the form, following the ways the melody emerges and the changes in tone color can make the structure easier to perceive. In performance, the melody should remain fully audible while the accompaniment and pedal are kept clear, preserving the stillness between the sounds. Drama should not depend on dynamic range alone; the weight and resonance of each note should be carefully shaped.
