The first piece in Schumann’s Seven Piano Pieces in Fughetta Form is a compact contrapuntal miniature in which a short subject is passed from one voice to another. Although several lines overlap in the texture, the music forms a single continuous arc, allowing the listener to follow the subject’s presentation and development, as well as the rise and release of tension. In performance, each recurrence of the subject should be clearly shaped, with the balance between it and the accompanying voices carefully controlled. The pedal should be used sparingly, supporting the resonance without obscuring the individual lines, while subtle articulation and natural phrasing bring out the movement of the inner voices.
