Taking the song of the blackbird as its point of departure, this miniature evokes the presence of nature through the piano’s colors and rhythms. It unfolds through interwoven short musical units, with contrasts between wide registers and rests, as well as between rapid motion and quiet space, providing much of its appeal. Rather than simply imitating a bird’s song, the performer should bring out the sharp contours of individual sounds and subtle changes of color. Avoid playing each figure too mechanically; preserve a sense of breathing in the pauses, and carefully shape the dynamics and pedaling to balance transparent sonorities with untamed vitality.
