The second piece of Ravel’s Nocturnes, “Fêtes,” brings to the foreground an atmosphere of celebration filled with light and movement rather than nocturnal stillness. Interwoven delicate rhythms and the placement of sounds suggesting a sense of distance create a feeling of changing scenes and growing excitement. In the two-piano version, it is important for the two performers to pass melodies, accompaniment, and inner parts clearly between them while shaping the complex sonorities into one broad flow. Repeated notes should remain light and supple rather than becoming hard, while careful control of dynamic gradations and pedal prevents muddiness and brings out the delicate colors within the brilliance. The changing intensity from quieter passages toward the climax also deserves close attention.
