The eleventh piece of Ligeti’s Musica ricercata is a quiet, contemplative movement whose title pays tribute to Frescobaldi. Maintaining a slow, steady tread, it carefully brings out changes in the placement and resonance of the notes, while repetitions and transformations of concise material shape the whole. Rather than treating it with broad, dramatic gestures, the performer should handle the duration of each note, the rests, and the resonance created by the pedal with care. Preserving the resonance even at restrained dynamics, while maintaining a breath that keeps the flow uninterrupted, brings out both its regard for earlier music and its modern sense of tension.
