Olivier Messiaen ： Livre d’oiseaux L’Alouette lulu

This work portrays the bird at its center and the surrounding natural world through the solo piano’s varied registers, sonorities, and rhythms. Brief, sharply defined calls contrast with delicate movements emerging from stillness, while the bird’s gestures appear and unfold with pauses of silence and resonance. One of the highlights is the sense of natural depth created by changes in density and register, as well as by overlapping sonorities. In performance, it is important to articulate each figure clearly while keeping the pedal from blurring the texture. Treating silence and resonance as part of the music, and shaping the piece with a flexible breath and a sensitive touch, allows the bird’s presence and the breadth of the landscape to come vividly to life.
