This is the tenth chorale prelude from Brahms’s organ works, arranged for solo piano by Busoni. Centered on a chorale melody, it unfolds through intricate writing in which several voices overlap, while the movement of the inner parts creates a richly layered sonority. Listening closely to the exchange between phrases and to the tension and release of the harmony helps clarify the musical flow. In performance, the principal melody should remain clear, with each voice retaining its direction, while the pedal must be used carefully to avoid blurring the texture. The piece calls for weight and gravity, but also for attentive shaping of the melody and the natural breathing of each phrase.
