🇷🇺Igor Fyodorovitch Stravinsky ： Concerto for Two Pianos

This concerto places the two pianos on equal footing, with the instruments closely answering one another rather than dividing into soloist and accompaniment. Within Stravinsky’s characteristically neoclassical clarity, sharp rhythms, concise motives, and contrapuntal interplay propel the music forward. The work consists of several movements of contrasting character, and one of its main attractions is the contrast between passages driven by momentum and quieter sections that allow the sonority to be heard. In performance, it is important not only to balance the volume of the two pianos, but also to clarify the role and handoff of each voice, carefully shaping the subtle breathing—including rests—the changes in dynamics, and the nuances within the dry sonority. Precise ensemble and an intellectually light touch bring out the work’s appeal.
