The Adagio, which concludes the Ten Pieces from the Ballet Cinderella, is a miniature in which a long-breathed melody unfolds over a slow tempo, inviting the listener to savor the subtle changes of harmony. Beginning in a quiet, poised manner, the music gradually deepens in expression, reaches a rich sonority at the melodic climax, and then flows onward with a lingering afterglow. In performance, the right-hand melody should be supported gently and fully, while the left-hand accompaniment must not become too heavy. Taking broad breaths between phrases and using the pedal in accordance with the harmonic changes, without clouding the sound, brings out the music’s transparency and lyricism.
