This is the first of the three pieces Prokofiev arranged for solo piano from his ballet Cinderella. As the title “Pavane” suggests, it evokes a measured step and ceremonial poise, while a subtle sense of shadow and tension lies within its poised melodies. Rather than relying on abrupt changes of scene, the piece seems to shape its flow through recurring steps and exchanges between melodic lines. In performance, it is important not to mark the beat mechanically, but to maintain a quiet breath and let the phrases sing in long arcs. Balancing the melody and accompaniment, and listening carefully to the changes in harmony, brings out the delicate expression within the concise writing.
