The first of the six pieces in Bilder aus Osten, this work was written for piano four hands and is distinguished by the overlapping sounds and musical exchanges between the two performers. The melody is not confined to one player, but moves between the upper and lower parts, changing its character along with the harmonic shifts. It is important to shape each short phrase carefully and to balance the dynamics of the voices as they respond to one another. A particular point of interest is the contrast between passages in which the melody is brought forward while the accompaniment remains light and those in which both parts create a fuller sonority. The pedal should be used with care to avoid blurring, while coordinated breathing, legato, and finely graded dynamics can bring out the transparent quality of the four-hand texture.
