This French dance is the fifth piece in Schumann’s piano duet collection Ball-Scenen. A clear metrical pulse and light, graceful motion support the entire piece, while the approachable flow evokes a scene of dancing and features an exchange between melody and accompaniment. A point of interest is the contrast in character between the different sections and the way the music moves naturally from one to the next. In performance, the two players should coordinate their breathing, preserve the buoyancy of the beat, and maintain a clear balance so that the melody is never obscured. Beyond mere lightness, it is also important to shape each phrase with elegance through its ending.
