Franz Joseph Haydn ： Arietta with 20 Variations in A-Dur Hob.XVII:2

This work begins with a simple, songful arietta as its theme, followed by 20 variations. While preserving the outline of the theme, it gradually introduces changes in register, accompaniment patterns, and rhythmic treatment, drawing a wide range of expression from the same material. It is important not only to bring out the character of each variation, but also to present the work as a continuous whole. In performance, the phrasing of the theme and the harmonic support should remain clear; decorative movement should not be rushed, and attention to balance between the voices and the direction of each phrase helps reveal the fascination of the transformations. In more delicate passages, a relaxed touch and a consistently light, transparent sound are especially effective.
