The first of Scriabin’s Two Impromptus is an improvisatory miniature in which a singing melody is passed above a flowing accompaniment. Its appeal lies in the contrast between gentle lyricism and passages of increasing motion, while the music changes expression without losing its sense of an overall flow. The melody should always be brought clearly to the foreground, with the inner voices and accompaniment kept light and supple. The pedal should support the resonance without allowing it to become blurred, changing with the harmony. Avoid pressing too heavily into the intricate figures; natural phrasing and flexible tempo fluctuations will bring out the work’s delicate sense of color.
