Written early in Scriabin’s career, this is the eighth piece in the 10 Mazurkas, Op. 3. The characteristic triple meter of the mazurka, together with the shifting accents within the beat, gives the music its forward momentum. Short melodic phrases form larger units through repetition and variation, while the alternation between dance-like lightness and singing expression provides much of the listening appeal. Bring out the melody clearly while keeping the accompaniment from becoming too heavy, and avoid stressing the accents mechanically; a supple rhythm is more effective. Carefully distinguish the character of each section and sustain the tension through the ends of phrases to create a coherent performance.
