Samuel Barber

Samuel Barber (1910–1981) was one of the leading American composers of the 20th century. He showed exceptional musical talent from an early age and wrote in a wide range of genres, including opera, orchestral music, concertos, and songs. At a time when modern music was becoming increasingly complex and avant-garde, Barber continued to value clear melody, rich lyricism, and finely crafted harmony. His style connects the tradition of Romantic music with the language of the 20th century. The Adagio for Strings, in particular, is the work that brought him broad public recognition. His piano music includes Excursions, Op. 20, which incorporates jazz and distinctly American rhythmic elements; Ballade, Op. 46, with its expressive lyricism and tense harmonic writing; and works such as 3 Sketches and Canzone. Barber occupies an important place in the development of American music.
