Overview

Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937) was a leading Polish composer of the modern era. He helped move Polish music beyond the legacy of Chopin, initially absorbing influences from composers such as Scriabin and Richard Strauss before developing a distinctive language that combined Impressionistic sonorities, Eastern-inspired melodies, and elements of Polish folk music. Rich harmony, refined attention to tone color, and fluid, sensuous melodic writing are characteristic of his music. His important piano works include the 9 Preludes, Op. 1, Métopes, Op. 29, Masques, Op. 34, and the 12 Études, Op. 33. Within their technically demanding writing, these pieces reveal a highly detailed palette of sound and a poetic expressiveness. By connecting Polish traditions with new European musical currents, Szymanowski established an important position in twentieth-century music, and his piano works continue to be widely performed.
