Overview

Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller (1806–1874) was a German Romantic composer and pianist who spent much of his career in France. He is now best known for music written for piano students. Rather than treating technical practice as a purely mechanical exercise, Burgmüller combined singable melodies, clear rhythms, dance-like movement, and vivid character pieces, encouraging players to develop musical expression alongside their technique. Pieces such as “Arabesque” and “La chevaleresque” from the 25 Études mélodiques, Op. 100, have become established repertoire for students moving from the elementary to the intermediate level. His 18 Études, Op. 109, and 12 Études brillantes et mélodiques, Op. 105, likewise display an accessible melodic style and the brilliance associated with Romantic piano music. Burgmüller was one of the composers who helped make educational piano pieces into engaging miniature character works rather than merely mechanical exercises.
