Overview

Henri Dutilleux (1916–2013) was a leading French composer of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire, he developed an individual musical language at a time when avant-garde approaches were gaining influence in the postwar period. His music is marked by meticulous construction, subtle rhythmic writing, rich harmony and color, and a keen sensitivity to instrumental sonority. He combined modern techniques with a deep awareness of the musical past, without adhering exclusively to any single style. His major works include Symphony No. 1, Métaboles, the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain…, and The Shadows of Time. Among his piano works, the Piano Sonata is especially significant, demanding a broad range of expression from the performer. Pieces such as Au gré des ondes and the Three Preludes also reveal his transparent sonorities and finely crafted musical design.
