Overview
Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov (1866–1901) was one of the notable composers of the late Russian Romantic period. Born into a poor family, he studied music in Moscow and later worked as a conductor and theater musician, but tuberculosis brought his life to an end at the age of thirty-five. Although his output is not extensive, the Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 2 reveal his gift for long-breathed melody, rich harmony, and a simple, songful character reminiscent of Russian folk music. Alongside his orchestral works, Kalinnikov wrote piano miniatures and collections of short pieces, which display a delicate lyricism and an approachable melodic style. His music belongs to the Russian tradition that developed after Tchaikovsky, and his relatively small body of work continues to receive performances today.
