Overview
Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska (1823–1861) was a Polish woman composer and pianist active in the 19th century. Although relatively little documentation about her life and wider output has survived, she became internationally known through her piano piece La Prière d’une vierge, or The Maiden’s Prayer, in E-flat major, Op. 4. Published in the 1850s, the work combines a calm, prayer-like theme with an elegant salon-piano style and was performed widely in Europe and beyond. Its accessible melody, clear harmonic language, and lyrical Romantic character reflect the culture of 19th-century piano miniatures enjoyed in homes and salons. The enduring popularity of The Maiden’s Prayer has given Bądarzewska a distinctive place in Polish music history, particularly as one of the few women composers of her era to achieve broad international recognition through a piano work.
