Overview
Moritz Moszkowski (1854–1925) was a Polish-born composer and pianist who worked mainly in Germany. A leading virtuoso composer of the late Romantic period, he wrote numerous works marked by refined harmony, flowing melodies, and clear, lively rhythms. His piano music is especially known for combining brilliant technical demands with a strong sense of melody and musical expression. The 15 Études, Op. 72, his best-known piano work, links the development of technique with expressive playing and remains popular with students and performers. His Spanish Dances and Suite, Op. 71, also reveal his colorful sonorities and energetic approach to dance rhythms. Following the piano tradition established after Chopin while responding to the concert culture and pedagogical needs of the late nineteenth century, Moszkowski left an important body of music that continues to be valued in both performance and piano education.
