Overview
Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804–1857) was a leading Russian composer and a pioneer of the Russian national school. Building on the compositional techniques he encountered in Western Europe, he incorporated Russian folk melodies, Orthodox chant modes, and distinctive rhythmic patterns into music marked by memorable melodies and vivid color. His operas A Life for the Tsar (Ivan Susanin) and Ruslan and Lyudmila, together with the orchestral work Kamarinskaya, helped establish a foundation for later Russian composers, including the Mighty Handful and Tchaikovsky. In the piano repertoire, The Lark is especially well known. Based on a song from Glinka’s song cycle A Farewell to St. Petersburg and arranged for piano by Balakirev, it is cherished for its singing melody and delicate lyricism.
