Overview
Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was an Austrian composer and pianist born in Pressburg, now Bratislava, Slovakia. As a child, he studied in Vienna under Mozart’s patronage and later received instruction from composers including Haydn and Salieri. He performed throughout Europe and served as a court Kapellmeister in Stuttgart and Weimar, establishing himself as one of the leading pianists of his time. His music combines the balance and clarity of the Classical style with brilliant virtuosity, graceful melodies, and elaborate ornamentation, placing him at an important point of transition from Classicism to Romanticism. His piano music, including Piano Concerto No. 2, the Piano Sonata in F-sharp minor, Op. 81, and the Piano Sonata in A-flat major, Op. 92, unites demanding technique with a strong lyrical element. His refined pianistic writing also influenced later nineteenth-century composers, notably Chopin.
