Overview

George Gershwin (1898–1937) was an American composer and pianist. Raised in New York, he achieved success with Broadway music and popular songs while also opening a new path in twentieth-century American music by combining jazz rhythms and blues vocabulary with classical forms. In Rhapsody in Blue, he expanded the language of jazz into a large-scale work for piano and orchestra; An American in Paris and his Piano Concerto in F likewise make distinctive use of energetic rhythms, memorable melodies, and inventive harmonies. Among his piano works, the Three Preludes are especially notable for bringing together the spontaneity of jazz improvisation and a carefully crafted compositional style. Gershwin’s music remains important for the way it bridges classical music and jazz while maintaining both accessibility and artistic sophistication.
