Overview
Friedrich Kuhlau (1786–1832) was a German-born composer and pianist who made his career in Denmark after settling there in 1810. Rooted in the clear formal language of the Classical period, he also brought lyrical melodies and a more nuanced expressiveness to his music, making him an important figure in the transition from Classicism to early Romanticism. He played a significant role in Danish musical life and is especially known for his flute music, including his flute sonatas and Grand Sonata. Kuhlau also composed a substantial body of piano music. His Sonatinas, Opp. 20 and 55, remain widely used around the world for their concise, well-balanced structures and appealing melodies. These works combine practical technical study with opportunities for musical expression, giving Kuhlau’s piano repertoire a lasting place in teaching and performance.
