Overview
Emmanuel Chabrier (1841–1894) was a French composer who helped bridge the Romantic tradition and modern French music. He studied law and worked as a civil servant while composing in his spare time, before devoting himself to music around 1880. His orchestral rhapsody España, inspired by a visit to Spain, is marked by vivid orchestral colors and energetic rhythms. The same combination of wit, elegance, and distinctive harmony can be heard in his opéra comique L’Étoile and other stage works. Chabrier’s piano music is represented above all by the Dix pièces pittoresques, a collection of ten character pieces that includes the Scherzo-valse and Idylle. Their bold harmonies, supple yet intricate rhythms, and sharply drawn moods reveal a highly individual voice. His originality contributed to the development of French music and influenced later composers, including Debussy and Ravel.
