Overview
César Cui (1835–1918) was a Russian composer and music critic who pursued music while also working as a military engineer. Together with Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Borodin, he formed the “Mighty Handful,” helping to shape a Russian musical culture attentive to national history, literature, and distinctive musical language. He wrote in many genres, including opera, song, and chamber music, and his style is marked by lyrical delicacy, refined harmony, and a preference for concise forms and intimate scale. Among his piano works, Kaleidoscope and the 25 Preludes are notable collections of character pieces, combining an approachable lyricism with finely detailed expression. Cui was also a prolific critic whose writings made him an important participant in Russian musical life during the latter half of the nineteenth century.
