Overview
Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826) was a leading composer and conductor of the early Romantic period, active primarily in Germany. With his opera Der Freischütz, he helped establish German Romantic opera by bringing folklore, nature, and supernatural atmosphere into the musical drama, influencing later composers including Wagner. His music is marked by vivid orchestral color and theatrical expression: while retaining Classical forms, he pursued freer structures and more evocative, scene-based sonorities. Among his piano works, Invitation to the Dance, the technically brilliant and lyrical Rondo brillante, the Piano Concerto No. 1, and the Konzertstück are particularly notable. By combining brilliant passagework with finely shaped melodic expression, Weber also made an important contribution to the development of nineteenth-century piano music.
