Overview

Antoine François Marmontel (1816–1898) was a French composer, pianist, and teacher. Active during the nineteenth century, as musical culture moved from Romanticism toward modern French music, he spent many years as a piano professor at the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught Georges Bizet, Claude Debussy, and other musicians. Known for connecting technical command with musical expression, he played an important role in the development of piano teaching in France. As a composer, he wrote numerous pedagogical studies and pieces designed to develop finger independence, as well as character pieces and elegant, approachable salon works for piano whose appeal rests on singing melodies. Rather than emphasizing virtuoso display, his music is marked by clear writing, practical usefulness, and a refined melodic sense. His book Les Pianistes célèbres also provides a valuable record of contemporary performers and the French musical world.
